Congratulations to Kyle Simmons for being named National Defensive Player of the Week. Kyle is a starting safety at Lafayette University. Plum Falls to the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils in Playoffs

The Plum Mustangs concluded the 2010 season with a 35-14 playoff loss to a very strong Mt. Lebanon team. The Mustangs were led in the game by QB Toph Zdinak’s 108 yards passing highlighted by a 43 yard touchdown to C.J. Lutz. Congratulations to the 2010 Mustangs for qualifying for the playoffs and having the first winning season since 2001.

Mustangs Clinch Playoffs!

The Plum Mustangs rumbled to a playoff spot in the Big East Conference and clinched the first winning season in the past 9 with a 24 to 13 victory over Kiski Area. The Mustangs jumped out to an early 13 to 0 lead with 2 rushing touchdowns by Tarique Ellis who totaled 103 yards for the night. Quarterback Toph Zdinak had another strong performance completing 17 of 26 passes for 191 yards with 1 touchdown pass to Senior Ryan Garrity who had 7 receptions. Junior wide receiver C.J. Lutz total 8 receptions for 117 yards. Senior Kicker Eddie Stover added to the scoring with a 20 yard field goal. Plum amassed 405 total yards of offense while holding Kiski Area to 134 total yards. Jim Keller led the Mustang defense with 2 sacks, and Demetrius Wellington and Tarique Ellis each had interceptions. The Mustangs will play in the 1st round of the WPIAL playoffs on Friday Nov. 5, 2010 against an opponent to be determined on Monday evening.

Plum Rolls over Foxes

The Plum Mustangs won their second consecutive Big East Conference game with a hard-fought 21-13 victory over the Fox Chapel Foxes. The Mustangs took advantage of an opportunistic running game. C.J. Lutz opened the scoring with a 57 yard touchdown run in the 1st quarter, and Tarique Ellis added two 2nd half touchdown runs highlighted by an explosive 89 yard touchdown. Ellis finished the contest with 151 yards rushing. The Mustang defense remained resilient as they overcame a strong Fox running game by forcing 2 turnovers. The Mustangs will face the Kiski Cavaliers on Friday October 29, 2010 at Plum Mustang Stadium with kickoff set for 7 pm.

Mustangs Tame Mountain Lions

The Plum Mustangs got back on track with an important conference victory against the Altoona Mountain Lions on Friday October 15, 2010. The Mustangs took advantage of another strong performance from QB Toph Zdinak who completed 12 of 19 passes for 150 yards with 2 touchdowns. Leading receiver C.J. Lutz contributed with 7 receptions for 100 yards with a 53 yard touchdown. Senior Ryan Garrity also had an 18 yard touchdown reception. Demetrius Wellington led the Mustang running game totaling 114 yards and 2 rushing touchdowns. The Mustang defense was led by Ryan Garrity’s 3 interceptions including one he returned for a 45 yard touchdown. The Mustangs will travel to Fox Chapel on Friday October 22nd to take on the Foxes with kickoff set for 7 p.m.

Congratulations Anthony Dilonardo for the KDKA Extra Effort Award

Congratulations Anthony Dilonardo for being awarded the KDKA Extra Effort Award for his excellence in the classroom and on the football field. Anthony maintains a 4.2 GPA. He is a starting offensive/defensive lineman as well as captain. Anthony also excels in wrestling where he has achieved All American status.

Central Catholic Defeats Plum

The # 1 ranked Central Catholic Vikings defeated the Plum Mustangs 33 to 6 Friday evening at Carnegie Mellon University. Central Catholic used a strong running game to keep the Mustangs off balance. Plum’s offensive performance was highlighted by a 67 yard touchdown run by Demetrius Wellington in the 2nd quarter. The Mustangs look to rebound on Friday October 15th when they host the Altoona Mountain Lions at Plum Mustang Stadium.

Plum honored with Coach of the Week award

Coach Sacco and The Plum Mustang Football team was awarded The Coach of the Week honors for their Week 1 27 - 21 victory over Franklin Regional by the Pittsburgh Steelers and The National Football League. They were honored at the October 3rd Steelers vs. Ravens game during the 1st half.

Plum Gains 300th Win!

The Plum Mustangs defeated the Highlands Golden Rams on Homecoming evening to get their 3rd win of the season, and the 300th win in school history. The Mustangs used a balanced offensive attack led by QB Toph Zdinak completing 13 of 14 passes with 193 yards and a 30 yard touchdown to leading receiver C.J. Lutz who caught 5 passes for 109 yards. The Mustang rushing attack gained over 170 yards with leading rusher Demetrius Wellington gaining 143 yards on 10 carries including 3 rushing touchdowns. Jake Diguilio ran for the other Mustang touchdown. Defensively, the Mustangs held the Rams to 131 total yards with an attacking, swarming defense capitalizing on 8 QB sacks. The game can be seen on Comcast On-Demand anytime throughout the year. The Mustangs travel to Carnegie Mellon University to take on the Central Catholic Vikings on Friday, October 8th with kickoff scheduled for 7:30 pm.

Penn Hills defeats Plum

The Penn Hills Indians defeated the Plum Mustangs Friday 28 to 14 on September 24th in a thrilling conference battle. The Indian’s broke a scoreless tie with 4 minutes remaining in the first half when they jumped out to a 14 point lead capitalizing on a Mustang’ turnover. Plum, however, rebounded to pull within 7 with 4 minutes remaining in the game, but the Mustangs failed to find the end-zone for the tying score. Plum’s rally was sparked by the emergence of Wildcat Quarterback Bobby Sekerka and some nifty misdirection running and an opportunistic defense. The Mustangs look to recapture their winning ways on Friday, October 1 when they host the Highland Golden Rams at Plum Mustang Stadium with kickoff at 7:00 pm.

Plum Battles Hard but Falls to Wolverines

The Plum Mustangs fell to the Woodland Hills Wolverines 21 to 0 in a hard fought conference test this past Friday evening. The Mustangs did not find the end zone even though the offense amassed 17 first downs and possessed the football for 29 minutes. The Mustangs are eager to return home after 3 consecutive road games to begin the season when they host the Penn Hills Indians at Mustang Stadium on Friday, September 24, 2010 with kickoff set for 7 pm.

Plum defeats Kittanning for 2nd win in a row

The Plum Mustangs captured their second win of the young season in as many tries with a victory over the Kittanning Wildcats. Quarterback Chris Zdinak completed 10 of 20 passes for 159 yards including a first half 10 yard touchdown pass to Joey Bailey. In the second half, the Mustang defense limited the Wildcats to 22 total yards with only 2 first downs. The Mustangs also imposed their will on the Wildcats offensively in the second half as Joe Bailey racked up 101 yards on 7 carries including a 52 yard touchdown run. The game ended when the Mustangs possessed the ball for a 17 play, 92 yard drive consuming the final 8 minutes of time. The Mustangs travel to the Wolvarena in Turtle Creek to take on the Woodland Hills Wolverines with kickoff at 7:00 pm.

The Mustangs begin the 2010 campaign with a victory

The Plum Mustangs started the 2010 season with a thrilling 27 – 21 victory over rivals Franklin Regional. Junior Chris Zdinak lead the Mustangs with 248 yards passing and completing over 70% of his attempts including 2 touchdown passes and 1 rushing touchdown. He completed touchdown passes to senior Joe Bailey and a 10 yard touchdown pass to senior Ryan Garrity with only 30 seconds remaining. Tarique Ellis ran 5 yards for the Mustangs other score. Junior receiver CJ Lutz highlighted the passing game with 5 receptions for 92 yards and Ryan Garrity had 6 receptions for 76 yards. The Mustangs visit Kittanning Friday, September 10, 2010 at 7:30pm.

Scrimmage #2 - Plum tops Latrobe

The Plum Mustangs scrimmaged the Latrobe Wildcats at Mustang stadium Friday August 27th. The varsity Mustangs completed their preseason scrimmages by scoring twice while giving up one score to Latrobe. Chris Zdinak continued to progress at Quarterback completing over 75% of his passes to 7 different receivers for over 200 yards. He completed a 35 yard touchdown pass to Junior CJ Lutz, and Jake Diguilio scored on a 1 yard run. Defensively, the Mustangs continue to make progress in a positive direction. The Mustangs visit the Frankilin Regional Panthers on Friday, September 3, 2010 with kickoff at 7:00 pm.

Scrimmage #1 - Plum vs. Penn-Trafford

The Plum Mustangs had their initial scrimmage to begin the 2010 season hosting Penn Trafford this past Saturday morning. Both teams got a lot of quality repetitions on offense and defense. Penn Trafford opened the scrimmage with a very accurate passing game, and the Mustangs later bounced back.

The overall score was 4 to 4 with Quarterback Christopher Zdinak continuing to progress after a solid sophomore season. He connected on a long completion with Senior Ryan Garrity. The Mustangs also scored on a 3 yard run by Jake Diguilio, a 5 yard run by Tarique Ellis, and a pair of 70 yard runs by Bobby Sekerka and Demetrius Wellington.

The Plum Mustangs will scrimmage the Latrobe Wildcats Friday August 27, 2010.
